School Council
Each Year 1 and Year 2 class elects two representatives to serve on the School Council for the academic year. School Council members act as the voice of their classmates, gathering ideas, suggestions and concerns and sharing these during regular meetings.
The School Council provides children with an opportunity to take an active role in school life and helps them to understand the importance of democracy, leadership and responsibility. Through discussions and decision-making, members contribute to improvements across the school and help ensure that children's views are listened to and valued.
School Council representatives are expected to be positive role models who demonstrate the school's values in their everyday actions. They support friendships, encourage kindness and inclusion, and help to ensure that all pupils feel safe, happy and respected. As ambassadors for the school, they represent Sandwich Infant School with pride and contribute to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone.
The School Council also plays an important role in fundraising, supporting school projects, gathering pupil feedback and helping to plan events and initiatives that enhance school life. Through these experiences, children develop confidence, communication skills and a sense of responsibility for their school community.
The School Council plays an important role in promoting and developing British Values across the school. Through the election process, children experience democracy by voting for their representatives and understanding that everyone's voice matters. Council meetings encourage mutual respect and tolerance, as children listen to different viewpoints, discuss ideas respectfully and work collaboratively to make decisions. Members learn about individual liberty by recognising that everyone has the right to express their views and contribute to school life, while also understanding the importance of responsibility. By helping to develop school rules, encourage positive behaviour and support a safe and inclusive environment, pupils gain an appreciation of the rule of law and how agreed expectations help communities to thrive.
