Young Carers

At Sandwich Infant School, we recognise that some children may have caring responsibilities at home. We work closely with Kent Young Carers, who provide advice, support and opportunities for children and families where a child may be helping to care for someone at home.

A Young Carer is a child who helps to care for a family member who may need additional support due to a physical disability, long-term illness, neurodivergence, mental health difficulty, substance misuse, frailty due to age, or other complex family circumstances. This care may involve practical tasks, providing emotional support, helping with younger siblings, or taking on responsibilities beyond those normally expected for a child of their age.

Being a Young Carer can sometimes have an impact on a child's wellbeing, friendships, attendance, or ability to fully engage in school life. We are committed to identifying and supporting Young Carers so that they can enjoy their childhood, achieve their potential and feel understood and supported within school.

Children can be identified as Young Carers from a very early age, and support is available for both the child and their family. Through our partnership with Kent Young Carers, children may be able to access additional support, activities, opportunities to meet other Young Carers and guidance tailored to their needs.

If you think your child may be a Young Carer, or if you would like to find out more about the support available, please speak to a member of staff in confidence or make a referral through Kent Young Carers. We are here to help and support every child to thrive both in and out of school.
