At Sandwich Infant School, we value Art and Design as an integral part of our children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the time to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas.
Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. We aim to foster the curiosity and confidence to experiment with a wide range of techniques and to appreciate the value of this exploration as an art process in itself. We encourage our children to find pleasure in both learning about art and being artists themselves. By broadening their awareness of work of artists and designers, our children will learn how creativity and ambition contribute to the history and culture of a community or nation. Through a particular focus on the world around us, the environment and artists who raise the awareness of recycling, our children will develop an understanding of how ever present art and design is and the impact it can have.
Our children understand that drawing is a useful tool that helps develop ideas, support thinking and can be used in all areas of the curriculum.
As the children progress, they will become critical thinkers and respectfully evaluate both others and their own work using appropriate vocabulary. They will learn to be self-reflective and by the time they leave the school they will be beginning to make informed choices about the media and effects they want to use to best express their thoughts and ideas.
Children are taught to express ideas and feelings, make observations and carry out visual investigations. They design and create in both 2D and 3D materials. They are taught to understand and use the process of developing and refining ideas to create their own, original art and craft pieces in a broad range of different styles and media.
We aim to celebrate art throughout the school through our displays and through an annual Art Week supported by the Arts Sandwich Society and exhibition.
